When I lived in Hamburg I liked to take a walk up and down the 'Landungsbrücken' next to the port in St. Pauli, which is where I met Uwe. He was one of several people living there, sheltered from wind and rain, in the entrances of an abandoned building at the east end of the pier. Uwe had a lot of stories to tell, always a smile on his sun-kissed face and at times he'd show me pictures of his son on his little smart phone. I loved his organized space with a perfect view of the famous Elbphilharmonie.
I started to bring left-over food from the place I worked at and to say hi after my shifts on my way home.
Eventually, I asked for permission to bring my camera.
Soon after I ended up moving to Berlin, but when I came back to visit Hamburg I looked for Uwe, Andi and the others I had met before. The place that used to be the a home and meeting place for many people got torn down as the city decided to restructure the whole area - now connecting the harbor of 'Landungsbrücken' with the new 'Hafen City'.
